Absent Light, Grimes Performs Pleasing Set At Holocene

Take away Grimes’ futuristic aesthetic often expressed in pictures, whether album art or magazine spreads, and you have a shy, if not talented, 23-year-old woman. I discovered this recently when I caught her sold-out Holocene show in Portland.

Claire Boucher, aka Montreal-based Grimes, kept her ponytail to the left side of her head like a girl at a slumber party, her hyperactive dance moves recalled spacemen bouncing on the moon, and her dialogue with the crowd barely registered beyond “I’m shy.”

And yet, her Feb. 21 performance was pleasing, in that it made me dance (in place), and perhaps dream about what she could be if she lets a little light in or embraces some kind of video production to bolster her set. Or any onstage production, for that matter.

Pitchfork Music Festival Initial Lineup A 6.2

The Pitchfork Music Festival has become something of an annual pilgrimmage for me each summer. It provides tremendous bang for buck — three days, 45-ish bands for $110 — and gives me an excuse to travel to Chicago, a city whose energy I love.

It was with tremendous interest last week I checked out the initial lineup for Pitchfork’s 2012 incarnation. I came away slightly disappointed, however. I must point out only 1/3 of the lineup has been released. Still, the list contains no one that would compel me to buy tickets when they go on sale and subsequently sell-out March 9.

A major problem I have with this lineup is the presumptive headliners. They inspire me to ask the most Casablancas-ian of questions: Is This It?
