On Coachella’s 1st Weekend And Spoiling My Dinner

Dancin' my ginger ass off!

I spoiled my dinner Friday night, according to friends. For the record, I drank a yellow 32-oz Gatorade, a monster bag of pepperoni-flavored Combos, and a slightly more petite bag of Welch’s grape snacks.

How did I spoil this, um, dinner, you ask.

I watched the first night of Coachella 2012 on YouTube via webcast. I am attending the mega festival’s second weekend with my boo, Kerry. That did not stop me from vegging out on the webcast. It was both enjoyable and a learning exercise to better decide who to see on the festival’s first day.

Here’s what I learned from watching Coachella’s Friday webcast. I did not watch either Saturday or Sunday. Kerry convinced me to not spoil my dinner any further.

Ryan Gosling ... Not Playing Coachella

NOTE: In case you missed it, here are my picks for Friday and Saturday.

At the Drive-In+Coachella 2012′s final day=Oh My Gosling!

Aside from the reunited Hell Paso punks I am excited about seeing almost everyone on Sunday’s lineup. Of the three days, Sunday will likely offer the toughest choices once time slots are revealed.

If it is possible to see both Florence+The Machine and At the Drive-In that would be incredible. I am looking forward to Real Estate, Wild Flag, and maybe Metronomy. Tent dance party! Woohoo!

Of the 15 bands/acts I picked I have seen a grand total of zero. Yes, zero! Sunday’s going to be rad!

Coachella 2012 Playlist (Saturday Edition)

Bon Iver at Edgefield

The sun is shining in Portland today. The high is supposed to reach 64. Spring is here, perhaps? Nah. I am not buying it.

In two weeks, I will be jettisoned into summer. The highs in Indio, Calif., on the second weekend of Coachella are forecasted at 97, 97, and, you guessed it, 97.

Water and sun block will compete to be my new best friends.

Below are 13 bands I am looking forward to on Coachella’s middle day. Of the bands/artists I listed, I’ve already seen Bon Iver, the Shins, tUnE-yArDs, and the Black Lips. I am scheduled to see Jeff Mangum on April 18. Can’t wait!

Did I mention Radiohead is playing on Saturday at Coachella? RADIOHEAD!!!

Coachella 2012 Playlist (Friday Edition)

Christopher Owens of Girls

Two weeks from today, I will be in Indio, Calif., for the mega-festival known as Coachella.

Coachella’s organizers have not released the schedule for the weekend yet. It’s driving me nuts. I want to fret over the tough decisions I am sure await.

The bands I listed here are bands I would see if everything were equal. Scratch that last sentence. Nothing is equal at a major festival. I’ll be lucky to see three of these bands.

Of the nine bands/performers I listed the only two I have seen live are up and coming Cali rapper Kendrick Lamar and indie darlings Girls.

I need to see WU LYF. I don’t understand why. It’s like a compulsion. I need gibberish rock’n'roll. I just do. Oh, and I need to see the Black Keys and get wound up and jump up and down like a kangaroo.

Pitchfork Fails To Garner “BEST NEW FESTIVAL” Status

I ruled Pitchfork Music Festival out a few weeks ago. The lineup looked thinner than the Olsen twins combined. I couldn’t justify flying to Chicago to see bands who I would pass on if they came to Portland. Maybe I’ll do Lollapalooza, I thought.

Then the indie tastemaker site announced its final festival additions Thursday. While I won’t equate the announcement to a home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game, I will say the addition of Beach House, Real Estate, and Wild Flag has piqued my interest.

The lack of capital letter headliners dimmed my interest in the first place. And it remains the reason I can’t bestow on this festival “BEST NEW FESTIVAL” status.

I’d give Pitchfork Music Festival a 7.6 out of 10 strictly on the lineup. The ticket prices and other amenities would bump it above an 8, but honestly everything starts and ends with who’s on the bill. So let’s look at the bands performing on each day.

My Favorite Songs of 2012 (1st Quarter Edition)

Bowerbirds' Beth Tacular at One Eyed Jacks.

Spring is here and life is beginning to thaw. So I am told. That’s not the case in the Pacific Northwest where life remains chill(y).

In honor of spring and in defiance of the wintery conditions in the Pacific Northwest, here are my favorite songs so far this year. I compiled the list using Grooveshark, meaning some songs were omitted because they were not available (i.e., Beach House’s “Myth”).

Enjoy and let me know which songs you think I omitted!

Most Viewed Posts (1st Quarter 2012 Edition)

King Midas Pujol

This is my 60th post of 2012. Don’t blow out the candles just yet. I set an unofficial goal for myself to post 365 times this year. I am slightly behind. I am averaging two posts every three days.

I am also averaging more than 100 page views per day this year. Not bad. The redhead in me wants more, more, MORE!!! I’ll lower my voice now.

Here are my five most viewed posts through the first three months of 2012. Guidos, meth cooks, and quarterbacks head the list. A special shout out to my friend, Jordy Pujol, who has the Midas touch when it comes to blogging. PS: The publication date is in parentheses. Interestingly, four of the five were written in January.

Five Songs I (Regrettably) Overlooked in 2011

Yes, 2012 has been underwhelming in the new music category. And yes, I am realizing that I ignored/missed some great music last year.

So to rectify this, below I have listed five songs I am digging right now that were released in 2011 and rightfully should have been in my Top 40.

Click on the links below to hear songs from the artists. Check! Them! Out!

“Don’t, The Pastor Said (You’ll Go To Hell)”

I grew up attending a Southern Baptist church in south Louisiana. Both my parents were ordained Southern Baptist ministers, though they long since switched denominations. I ate from a buffet of fundamentalist hatred and bigotry each Sunday morning for 12 to 15 years. No surprise, then, I have issues with organized religion. Today, I’m reading a book about Iraq’s people called Night Draws Near. Some of the fundamentalist clerics author Anthony Shadid described within remind me of Southern Baptist ministers I have encountered. I don’t need to meet anymore fundamentalist holy men — whether Christian or Muslim.

NOTE: This is a composite sketch of Southern Baptist ministers I heard preach — I did not include my parents in the composite because they always struck me as moderate, even left-leaning (oh no!). The worst offenders were the revivalists. They would scream and stomp and work themselves into striking distance of a heart attack. All to rescue sinners like me. Also: I upped the tithe amount most pastors request. Call it artistic liberties.

The great Kendrick Lamar

The Mayan Year of Apocalypse is seven weeks in, and has yet to produce its first GREAT album. No worries. There are still 300 days until the world goes kablooey.

What is a GREAT album? The kind of album that makes me shun all other albums for a week straight or more.

Absent a GREAT album to obsess over, I have listened to several new and new-ish songs on repeat to pass the time in these dreary Portland winter months.

I encourage you to check out the songs below, as they hold something different for everyone.
