Dad’s Summer Jam: Let’s Have A Party

Toby Keith and his favorite cup

The race for Summer Jam 2012 is a wide-open affair at the moment. But if I had to select a song now, it would be Icona Pop’s “I Love It”, with its ear-grabbing lyric, “You’re from the 70′s but I’m a 90′s bitch.”

I also love love love Japandroids’ “Younger Us”, a song that initially came out in 2010, but is on the duo’s fantastic new record, Celebration Rock.

My dad, Ray Jr., has already discovered his 2012 summer jam.

He is enamored with Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup”, a song that came out in 2011. He’s talked about “Red Solo Cup” two of the last three times I’ve spoken to him.

“That’s the greatest song ever written,” my dad said, fully sober.

He was joking, I think, but his adoration for “Red Solo Cup” was real. It tells a story of a guy who “starts out sober and ends up planted,” he explained, struggling to withhold laughter.

“This is all about my boy,” my dad continued, referring to his first born, Toby Keith. “The whole thing is about him. It’s probably about a party he threw.”

There you have it. I don’t get my musical ear from my dad. I love him, regardless, like he loves “Red Solo Cup”.
