Coachella 2012 Recap (Saturday Edition)

So good, so dangerous

The temptation of eating anything with even the slightest ties to Louisiana suckered me again and again during the Coachella festival. This sort of explains why I ate a flank steak with “Louisiana barbecue sauce” Saturday afternoon before encountering the festival’s 105-degree heat.

Word to the wise: Don’t eat flank steak before attending Coachella. It is akin to playing Russian Roulette.

Fortunately, my heavy meal, which also included mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables, did not lead to repeat porta-potty visits. It did weigh me down for the day’s first few sets. As I reflect on it, Saturday’s lineup did not offer many opportunities for dancing. So maybe the day’s lesson is eat flank steak prior to attending Coachella ONLY if the day promises little dancing.

NOTE: You can read my Friday recap here.

Bon Iver at Edgefield

The sun is shining in Portland today. The high is supposed to reach 64. Spring is here, perhaps? Nah. I am not buying it.

In two weeks, I will be jettisoned into summer. The highs in Indio, Calif., on the second weekend of Coachella are forecasted at 97, 97, and, you guessed it, 97.

Water and sun block will compete to be my new best friends.

Below are 13 bands I am looking forward to on Coachella’s middle day. Of the bands/artists I listed, I’ve already seen Bon Iver, the Shins, tUnE-yArDs, and the Black Lips. I am scheduled to see Jeff Mangum on April 18. Can’t wait!

Did I mention Radiohead is playing on Saturday at Coachella? RADIOHEAD!!!

Cajun Tomato’s 2012 Coachella Must-See Acts

Look what came in the mail today!

This week, a 1,000 bands and seemingly 10,000 blogs invaded Austin, Texas, for South by Southwest. That’s all well and good, but my focus is square on a little music festival taking place next month in Indio, Calif.

I received my Coachella bracelets today in a stylish box with a poster/calendar, welcome guide, and stickers. When I opened the box, the sun appeared in all its glory and kicked the shit out of Portland’s sadsack winter weather.

Below are 10 bands, in order of interest, I am deeming must-sees at Coachella this year. Nine of the 10 bands I have not yet seen live. Hopefully, schedule permitting, I will get to see as many of these as possible.

Open Letter To Jeff Mangum

Jeff is coming to Portland! Hooray!

Jeff,
Thank you! You answered my request to visit Portland. Maybe you read The Cajun Tomato, maybe you don’t. My money’s on “don’t.” Either way I am so excited!!!!

No, seriously. I had a hard time containing my joy today when I learned you were playing two shows here in Portland. I spent a solid hour doing an ecstatic, pants on fire dance in my mind … at least, I hope it was all in my mind. That could have been awkward.

I adore your music. Want proof? Check out No. 1 on my favorite albums of the 1990s list.

Did I mention I was EXCITED?!?!? OK. I’ll stop before I hyperventilate.

Hope to see you soon,
Ray aka “One-Headed Boy”

Please Come To Portland, Jeff Mangum!

Come to Portland, Jeff!

It’s official: Jeff Mangum is not quite so reclusive anymore.

Tonight I watched a streaming clip of the Neutral Milk Hotel frontman performing solo before a group gathered in Liberty Park for the Occupy Wall Street event in NYC. He blazed through his band’s seminal album, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, with the crowd’s voices providing support.

I watched Mangum on livestream.com from 3,000 miles away while occupying my living room’s swivel chair. Sadly, Portland has no Wall Street to occupy that would motivate Mangum to play here. (I’m only half-joking.)

Regardless, I hold out hope Mangum will visit the Rose City someday.
