Photos From Pitchfork Music Festival 2011 (Saturday)

Cajun Tomato @ Pitchfork Music Festival 2011 (Saturday)

Growing up in small town Louisiana I did not have the opportunity to see many shows until I reached college. By that time, some of my favorite bands — At the Drive-In, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Dismemberment Plan, etc. — had either broken up or were on the verge of doing so.

For me, the opportunity to see Travis Morrison and The Dismemberment Plan blister through a set packed with their best cuts at Pitchfork Musical Festival Saturday was something I did not think would happen. Alas, it did. And it was utterly fantastic.

Dismemberment Plan wasn’t all the day offered though. Fleet Foxes headlined Saturday. While some find the band’s live show bland, I love the way the Seattle-based sextet flawlessly recreates the ageless harmonies of their studio recordings.

There were some duds too. Destroyer’s Dan Bejar seemed more interested in sipping his next drink than engaging in his band’s music. As if his selection as the day’s undercard wasn’t odd enough, DJ Shadow spun his records from inside a giant egg. Gang Gang Dance provided a 50-minute long “WTF?” sequence.
